Gonz and NIGO unveil the adidas Superstar 80s Pioneers Pack
adidas recently announced the launch of the highly anticipated Superstar 80s Pioneers Pack, featuring collaborations with creative minds, skater Mark Gonzales and designer NIGO.
adidas Originals Superstar 80s by Gonz
Going against the grain and blasting a new path forward is the Mark Gonzales way. He is an innovator and an iconoclast, and it is this pioneering spirit that adidas Originals pays homage to with their latest collaboration with the skater/creative – The Superstar 80s by Gonz.
For ‘The Gonz’, the journey truly became the destination as he appropriated the urban landscape to express a new form of individuality and artistry on four wheels. In doing so, he redefined the ambitions of an entire generation of skateboarders for years to come. Gonzales is equally known as a free-form thinker and prolific artist, defying pigeonholes and mainstream classification. His body of work ranges from poetry books to sculptures and paintings which have been warmly received all over the world. It is this hunger to create that inspired the Superstar 80s by Gonz. The all-white leather upper becomes a blank page for the artist.
Gonz invites the wearer to leave their mark on the Superstar 80s or for those who crave simplicity; the clean and classic design is accented with some subtle Gonz creative touches. Debossed hand lettering on the tongue and a signature character on the heel tab are a subtle nod to those who know, while the name that says it all – ‘GONZALES’ – sits defiantly on the lateral.
adidas Originals Superstar 80s by NIGO
Many designers try and tap into the zeitgeist, but designer/creative NIGO has proved time and time again that he is a master of the craft. An undisputed game-changer within style culture, NIGO’s ability to connect the dots between tradition and the future, East and West, and pop culture and high art has become his calling card and is highlighted in his latest collaboration with adidas Originals – the Superstar 80s by NIGO.
Tokyo is one of the most dynamic and creatively diverse cities on the planet, but it wasn’t always as synonymous with influential street fashion as it is today. A huge chunk of that credit belongs to NIGO, whose freewheeling eye and talent for re-appropriating iconography reimagined the Japanese scene in the 90s. As his brand grew from its origins as a small clothing store in Harajuku into a globally recognised cult, NIGO wrote the rulebook for all others to follow. NIGO paved the way for all Japanese streetwear labels to connect with a massive global audience. NIGO’s eye for classic iconography is illustrated in his Superstar 80s sneaker. Featuring the signature adidas Originals by NIGO ‘Grand Slam’ graphic, the all-over print envelops the upper of the Superstar 80s model and is a fitting homage to his love of sportswear and Americana – and of course classic footwear.
